Though often regarded as a toy by most Americans, the bicycle is the most popular vehicle on the planet.  The combination of man (or woman) and bicycle is the most efficient means of transportation known to man.  Riding a bicycle for transportation is not only a healthy and efficient way to get exercise, but it can save you a small fortune and save our planet from the pollution created by too many automobiles.

The average commute in the US is just under five miles -- about 20 minutes on a bicycle.  The daily cost of that commute varies from two or three dollars for public transportation to over $20 a day or more when including gas, tolls and parking, not to mention the cost of insurance and depreciation.  While you can spend several thousand dollars on a hi-tech bicycle these days, you can still find perfectly good used bikes for around $50 and decent new ones for under $200.  It is highly recommended that you get your bicycle from a reputable bike shop.  The bikes they sell generally have better components than cheaper department store bikes and they are better equipped to service your bike and help you select one that is right for you.
